Part 3: This Article

In rain-soaked Gilneas, Shiyaorieese and Hiyorieese debate fluency. N1 is just the threshold—elegance, the longer road. Before beauty, the missing ingredient is ruthlessness in revision: teaching a writer to cut, to stop apologizing to her sentences, to become more precise without becoming someone else.

Poisoned Soil — entry III. N1 is the threshold; elegance is the longer road.

Rain over Gilneas. One arcade. Two women with competing definitions of fluency.

— You’ve been giving her texts above her level.

— Above her comfort. Not above her ability.

— There is a difference.

— Yes. Which I just demonstrated.

Hiyori accepted this with the composure of someone who had long since stopped expecting humility from this particular nightborne.

“She could pass N1.”

— That is not the interesting threshold.

“Proficiency is measurable. Elegance is not.”

“And what does she lack, before elegance?”

One beat.

— Ruthlessness.

“In language?”

— In revision. Her first instinct is always mercy. In prose, that weakens the sentence.

— So you are teaching her to cut.

— Teaching her to stop apologizing to the sentence for knowing what she means.

“You sound protective,” Hiyori said.

— Your hearing remains inconvenient.

“And native-level elegance?”

— A long-term ceiling. Not a costume.

— Only making her more precise without asking her to become anyone else.

“That may be the kindest thing you do.”

— Do not call it kind.

“Why not?”

— People start expecting softness.

— Beauty can come last. First, the sentence must stand.
