She wrote them herself. That was the first mistake.
Hiyo had offered. Giselle had said no.
“I know what we are selling,” she said, which was technically true, and also the problem.
Draft One
The Gilded Décolletage Co. is not what the name suggests. It is better. Shelter for women who work hard and deserve more than scraps. You earn your keep, you help the next one through the door. That is the only contract. Whisper Giselleese if you are interested.
She read it back. It was accurate.
She posted it.
Four whispers. Two were serious inquiries. One was a man who had misread the tone. One was Moryeese, who had screenshotted it and was already composing a follow-up.
Draft Two (after the incident with the man)
GDCO is recruiting. Women wanted — skilled, principled, or both. Roof, coin, and a cause. We run clean. Whisper for details.
Shorter. She had learned from draft one that brevity reduced a certain category of respondent.
It worked. Mostly.
Draft Three (Hiyo’s suggested revision, included without credit)
Does good work. Asks fair coin. Keeps her own counsel. If that’s you — the Gilded Décolletage Co. has a bunk, a ledger entry with your name, and work worth doing. Women of any stripe welcome. Whisper Giselleese.
She had not asked Hiyo to revise it.
Hiyo had revised it anyway.
It was, Giselle admitted privately, better.
She did not tell Hiyo this.
Draft Four (the one she used after a long night)
The Gilded Décolletage Co. is looking for her. The one who is good at what she does and tired of doing it for nothing. We offer shelter, coin, and a warband that has your back. In return? You pay it forward. Whisper for details.
This one she posted at three in the morning.
It got six responses before dawn.
She noted this in the ledger under effective outreach, which was a category she had invented the same night, and which she suspected said something about her state of mind that she preferred not to examine.
Draft Five (kept in reserve, never posted)
If you are tired. If you have been useful your entire life and have nothing to show for it. If you are good at things people do not want to pay for. Come find us. We are not glamorous. The name is a joke. But we will not waste you.
She looked at it for a long time.
Then she closed the ledger.
Some things were true in a way that made them unpostable.
She kept it anyway.
