Tactical Chronicle: The Eighteenth Stone #
The sun sits fat and low over the Dragon Isles, pouring rose-gold across the ridge above Valdrakken until even the dust seems to glow. The rest of the warband is a quarter-mile back down the trail, arguing about lunch. Vyrneese stopped walking four minutes ago.
She kneels at a weathered cairn with her shield planted in the earth beside her, one crimson-gauntleted hand raised toward the light. Between thumb and forefinger sits a plain grey stone. No glint, no vein of ore, nothing a prospector would glance at twice. She studies it the way she once studied battlefield maps: completely, reverently, with her whole heart.
She can feel it. The pressure that squeezed it, the patient violence of the mountain that coughed it up, the long age of weather. Neltharion made her, and stone speaks to her in a voice that belongs to no one else. It is the one inheritance from him she never has to argue with herself about.
Her high red-pink ponytail catches the bloom, and a dimple deepens in her cheek as her grin grows wide and unguarded. At her hip the leather pouch is already full of its seventeen witnesses. A baby drake, one of the seven battle pets she adopted because Lulureese said it was a thing people do, peers over her shoulder, deeply unconvinced.
“Look,” she whispers when Zyneese finally catches up, holding it out like a newborn. “It is nine thousand years old. It has never been looked at. Until now.”
Zyneese stares at the stone. Then at Vyrneese. Then, very carefully, says nothing at all, which is its own kind of kindness.
Linguistic Note: In Common, “rock” is a noun. In Vyrneese, “rock” is a complete sentence, a love letter, and occasionally a tactical recommendation.
In the Starveil Warband, steel holds the line, but it is Vyrneese’s wonder that reminds everyone what the line is for.
