But as she stared at the parchment sheet covered in Brasskeese’s jagged ink numerals, she felt a cold sweat run down her spine. The numbers did not balance. The term ‘rent’ seemed to be a recurring curse, a spell that devoured gold coins every month without fail. She held the ledger upside down, hoping a change in perspective would make the math make sense, but it only made the ink run into a blur. ‘Perhaps,’ she whispered, reaching blindly for her teacup, ‘if I make enough chamomile-lavender tea, the spreadsheet will simply disappear…’
