“They search the perimeter for shadows and footprints; Moryeese arrives by line item and departs before the ink dries.”

Tactical Chronicle: The Harbor Crane Gantry

#

Twilight rolls heavy across the ironworks, setting the skyline ablaze in warm copper bloom and sharp amber backlight. High above the noisy machinery and clanking cranes, the late afternoon air catches drifting soot motes and steam wisps, transformed by lush 35mm optical bloom into golden embers suspended in space.

Moryeese perches motionless on the narrow flange of a suspended shipyard crane. At barely 112 centimeters, her compact dark-alloy chassis is practically invisible against the structural beams—save for the warm rim lighting grazing her Grandmaster Rook Pauldrons and the steady, cold amber incision of her diamond visor slit. Her articulated mechanical fingers make a microscopic adjustment to a micro-spanner, calibrated to two decimal places.

"Delivery confirmed at slip four," her internal vox unit registers in flat, measured pitch. "Crate contents: nineteen crates of purified arcanite rivets, zero customs entanglements, standard hazard surcharge appended."

Below, harbor guards sweep their lanterns through empty alleyways, utterly oblivious to the silent mechagnome balanced forty paces above their helmets.

Linguistic Note: In mechagnome logistics parlance, ‘The Rook’s Clearance’ denotes a delivery that is legally invisible until the exact moment the invoice auto-debits the recipient’s bank vault.

The yellow visor pulses once. A pneumatic whisper vents from her heel servos, and before the harbor bells conclude their twilight chime, the crane arm stands completely deserted—the cargo delivered, the perimeter unchallenged, and the ledger reconciled to the copper.
