Characters: Vyrneese (Warrior), Lulureese (Priest)
“Vyrneese.”
“Mm?”
“There’s a bird. On your head.”
Vyrneese paused mid-swing at the training dummy, her greatsword hovering in the air. “What?”
Lulureese tilted her head, squinting at the small crimson and gold creature perched atop her sister’s helmet. It chirped once, ruffled its feathers, then settled back down like it owned the place.
“A bird,” Lulu repeated. “Small. Red. Very comfortable-looking.”
“Oh. That.” Vyrneese returned to her strikes—thunk, thunk, thunk—completely unbothered. “It’s from the Trans-Dimensional Bird Whistle.”
“The… what now?”
“It’s an heirloom toy. Found it in the warband bank.” Another strike. The bird bobbed with the motion, chirping indignantly. “Thought I’d try it out.”
Lulureese blinked. “And it just… sits there?”
“Apparently.”
“While you fight.”
“Yep.”
“Doesn’t that seem… I don’t know, impractical?”
Vyrneese lowered her sword and turned to face Lulureese, the bird still perched proudly on her head. “Lulu. I charge into battle wearing a helmet with horns the size of a small tree. A tiny bird is the least impractical thing about me.”
Lulureese opened her mouth to argue, then closed it. She had a point.
The bird chirped again, as if in agreement.
“Besides,” Vyrneese added, hoisting her sword back up, “it’s kind of nice. Like having a little companion. One that doesn’t judge my life choices.”
“I don’t judge your life choices!”
“You literally just questioned my bird.”
“That’s not—” Lulureese sighed, a small smile tugging at her lips. “Fair enough.”
Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.
“Does it have a name?”
“Not yet. You want to name it?”
Lulureese considered the tiny creature, still bobbing along with each strike. “How about… Chirpsworth?”
Vyrneese laughed—a genuine, full laugh that made the bird flutter its wings in alarm before settling again. “Chirpsworth. I love it.”
“Good. Chirpsworth it is.” Lulureese watched her sister return to training, the absurd little bird bouncing on her head with each impact.
Some things in Azeroth didn’t need to make sense.
Sometimes, you just needed a bird on your head.
